Created during a 50 minute live art performance, 'Quintet' was the result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration between a string quintet, a dancer and three visual artists. This two piece series was made in response to the music and the musicians, the dancer's movements and the atmosphere of the audience.

Live art breaks down traditional constructs surrounding art making and viewing. It allows the viewer to experience the process with significantly more value and integration. The material result is forever attached to the performance in an atypical, unseen, almost 'magical' way.

Julie Purcell is an artist with a background in graphic design. Julie is currently completing her Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours, and a current focus on painting. The idea of memory is a prominent aspect of her work. Responding to music or movement through live art is a chance for Julie to express and present the typically hidden process and intuitive nature of art.

Alicia Hollier is a Brisbane artist and teacher working in multiple sectors of the art world. She has obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and graduated with a major in Interdisciplinary Sculpture. With an interest in cross disciplinary collaborations, Alicia is seeking to explore and question traditional methods of art practice.

Wendy Cumes-Rowell is an accomplished, award winning artist with a background in art direction and graphic design. She has obtained a Post-Graduate degree in Fine Art and is now in the process of completing her Masters degree. Working as an artist in residence, Wendy runs her own business teaching art to primary school children on Brisbane’s north side.

Hannah Hughes is a Brisbane based dancer who has spent years dancing for Queensland Ballet. She has an exceptional commitment to the discipline and technique of ballet, her first love. A natural performance collaborator, Hannah responds to music and art making with fluid and improvisational dance movement that serves as an evolving source of inspiration.

The string quintet was coordinated by Byron Mengel, a versatile musician from Manhattan who is now a permanent member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of Juilliard, Byron was accepted into a conducting Masters program at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. At the time, only two people were accepted into this program, the other person being the esteemed George Manahan.
