ink, chalk pastel, charcoal, paint and collaged music sheets on kraft paper

Size: 121 cm (H)  x 81 cm (W) framed

Created during a 50 minute live art performance, 'Hannah' was the result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration between a string quintet, a dancer and three visual artists. This two piece series was made in response to the music and the musicians, the dancer's movements and the atmosphere of the audience.

Live art breaks down traditional constructs surrounding art making and viewing. It allows the viewer to experience the process with significantly more value and integration. The material result is forever attached to the performance in an atypical, unseen, almost 'magical' way.

Julie Purcell is an artist with a background in graphic design. Julie is currently completing her Bachelor of Fine Art with Honours, and a current focus on painting. The idea of memory is a prominent aspect of her work. Responding to music or movement through live art is a chance for Julie to express and present the typically hidden process and intuitive nature of art.

Alicia Hollier is a Brisbane artist and teacher working in multiple sectors of the art world. She has obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and graduated with a major in Interdisciplinary Sculpture. With an interest in cross disciplinary collaborations, Alicia is seeking to explore and question traditional methods of art practice.

Wendy Cumes-Rowell is an accomplished, award winning artist with a background in art direction and graphic design. She has obtained a Post-Graduate degree in Fine Art and is now in the process of completing her Masters degree. Working as an artist in residence, Wendy runs her own business teaching art to primary school children on Brisbane’s north side.

Hannah Hughes is a Brisbane based dancer who has spent years dancing for Queensland Ballet. She has an exceptional commitment to the discipline and technique of ballet, her first love. A natural performance collaborator, Hannah responds to music and art making with fluid and improvisational dance movement that serves as an evolving source of inspiration.

The string quintet was coordinated by Byron Mengel, a versatile musician from Manhattan who is now a permanent member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of Juilliard, Byron was accepted into a conducting Masters program at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. At the time, only two people were accepted into this program, the other person being the esteemed George Manahan.

mixed media collage

Size: 51.5 cm (H)  x 41 cm (W) framed

Donna Malone is a Brisbane based artist with a commitment to art that has seen her follow a continuous education trajectory across Australia, Europe and America. She has participated in several artist residencies, held 10 solo exhibitions and been selected for over 15 art prizes including the Rotary Art Spectacular (2016 Best Mixed Media Prize). Donna has been represented by Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery for over 10 years.

Her full time practice depends on the persuasion and engagement of available materials and the environment. The interplay of breath/spirit through drawing and paper collage informs her practice.

“For me Drawing is not just the art of measuring and putting down it is also the act of receiving. When the language of Drawing is open, I experience and respond to an energy coming from behind the given set of appearances.

Collaging necessitates the paper being interrogated in an urgent and sensual way by marking, erasing, folding, gluing, shuffling, gauging and stapling it to exploit its surface.

Through both these processes, I am aware of a reciprocal energy moving towards me in an insistent and unspoken dialogue. By collaborating with this energy, I am participating in ‘a slice of the action’ as a series of marks and exertions are caught on the material and become the image.

The work is ‘done’ when the piece is still alive and conversing, when it hasn’t been laboured over or silenced, when I am still able to hear it breathe.”

Acrylic on cement cast sculpture (includes presentation case)

Size: 13.5 cm (H)  x 7.5 cm (W)

Dave Behrens is an award winning Brisbane artist who has exhibited nationally and overseas. His vigorously patterned work can be found in private collections globally.

Behrens has been painting in acrylic since 2002 primarily to investigate the themes of identity and self. He has developed a distinctive mark making and pattern forming technique that references ancient cultures, tribal art and hieroglyphs. The artist's mix of universal symbology and pop kitsch aesthetic produces a whimsical yet deceptively provocative range of work.

Behrens has recently begun applying his technique to 3-D objects with interesting results. His Pear series evokes body art, with the object's unique form offering further connotations of image and identity.
